Managing Boundaries: Personal Life Impacting Workplace Dynamics
Let’s get straight to it. No games here!
Conflict can arise in the workplace when personal life bleeds into professional life due to several reasons:
1. Misunderstandings: Personal interactions can be misinterpreted in a professional setting, leading to misunderstandings and disagreements. Not everyone digests information or behavior the same, so when mixing personal and professional can become a blended ball of confusion.
2. Bias and Favoritism: Personal relationships may lead to perceptions of bias or favoritism, causing resentment and conflict among coworkers. This can also lead to formations of a type of discrimination that makes sense in one’s mind, potentially leading to a discrimination lawsuit.
3. Boundary Issues: Blurred boundaries can create confusion about roles and expectations, leading to friction and disputes. Thus making some feel that they have a sense of hierarchy and entitlement in your life and act in manners that cross the line.
4. Privacy Concerns: Sharing personal information can lead to breaches of privacy, making individuals uncomfortable and leading to potential conflicts. This also can create a high school like environment that becomes catty, deceiving and unhealthy should those breaches of privacy become prominent.
5. Differing Priorities: Personal issues might take precedence over professional responsibilities, causing clashes with colleagues who are focused on work-related goals.
6. Emotional Reactions: Personal emotions can spill over into professional interactions, leading to heightened tensions and conflicts in the workplace. This is a big one because often times this is the leading issue in the creation and rise of conflict.
